CQS Performance Solutions is helping Africa’s leading producer and marketer of spirits, fine wines and alcoholic fruit beverages use its data much more effectively as a tool to drive ever higher levels of performance.

Customer profile

Distell was created in 2000 by the merger of Stellenbosch Farmers’ Winery (SFW) and Distillers Corporation. SFW was founded in 1925 by William Charles Winshaw and excelled at producing quality wines and, later, helped create the new segment of alcoholic fruit beverages. Distillers Corporation, the brainchild of Anton Rupert, came to dominate the distillates market, notably brandy. In addition, it created a new African icon, Amarula Cream, which today is one of the top-selling cream liqueurs in the world. Distell markets some of South Africa’s iconic liquor brands, among them Drostdy-Hof, Nederburg, Allesverloren and Plaisir de Merle in wines; and Klipdrift and Oude Meester in brandy. The company employs nearly 5 000 people and has an annual turnover in excess of R14 billion.

From one point of view, this project was all about big data – really big data – and how to turn it into valuable business information, within the context of a set of complex businesses processes.
